Eneos and Marubeni have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the introduction of an environmentally friendly ethylene carrier vessel for ethylene delivery.
The new vessel is claimed to be the first ethylene carrier equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of running on liquified natural gas and very low sulfur fuel oil for ethylene export from Japan. Compared with conventional ethylene carriers, the new vessel and its propulsion system are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40%.
Both companies have considered carbon neutralization in the ethylene supply chain and will utilize the environmentally friendly ethylene carrier for delivery operations starting in 2024. The vessel will be chartered by Marubeni.
Eneos is an ethylene producer and Marubeni is a sales and logistics provider, so the pair have supplied ethylene to customers for many years.
Both parties will continue to develop carbon neutralization in the ethylene supply chain to meet the demands of customers in need of decarbonization solutions.
