Dutch driveline specialist ADS van Stigt and Finnish gearbox manufacturer Katsa are presenting their newly developed 2L550 gearbox at this year’s show in Amsterdam. The 2L550 is a redundant gearbox specifically developed to allow the application of low-torque, high-speed electric motors for ship propulsion on seagoing vessels.
Designed for ships with electric propulsion using low-torque, high-speed electric motors, the 2L550 is ideal for combining with diesel-electric drive lines. As a result, ship designers, shipbuilders and shipowners can now select a standard – and often even lighter and smaller sized – electric motor. In addition, the twin input/single output gearbox design allows for the propulsion system to be redundant. Furthermore, an integrated lubrication system ensures a long, reliable service life.
Holland Shipyards Group has already placed an order with both companies to initially supply five of the gearboxes for ships designed by Conoship.
“As a driveline specialist, ADS van Stigt has been a pioneer in hybrid gearbox solutions for inland ship propulsion and now we are moving into electric propulsion,” said Sander Snoek, business development manager, ADS van Stigt, on the first day of the show. “Being at Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo allows us to present new solutions to support the energy transition in shipping. At the same time, we are also able to gather the latest updates on developments in marine propulsion and power generation.”
