Clean energy supplier Corvus is primed to supply Finnish ferry operator Finnlines with three battery hybrid systems for a trio of vessels set for delivery in 2021.
The three ships are designed to be solely for ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) cargo and will be the most environmentally friendly vessels of their kind, with 5,000m2 of vehicle decks and a capacity of 5,800 lane-meters. The ships will be built using Corvus’s latest available technology with the hull encasing energy-efficient engines, exhaust gas cleaners and an air lubrication system to reduce drag through the water.
Due to extended operation in the Baltic Sea, the vessels’ 238m hull will be customized to meet the company’s extensive requirements of heavy cargo transportation and operations in cold climate areas.
Roger Rosvold, senior vice president of sales at Corvus, said, “There is significant potential for fuel and emissions reduction in ro-ro ships as they are normally on fixed routes. Finnlines is at the absolute forefront when it comes to innovation and sustainable operations. They have invested heavily in technology for all their vessels to reduce emissions.”
