In a claimed world’s first, Alma Clean Power has successfully tested its 6kW direct ammonia fuel cell system, which is designed to enable zero-emission power for deep-sea shipping applications.
The company is developing modularized solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems for the maritime sector, with the 6kW unit being the first part of a complete 100kW SOFC module. The successful test validates Alma’s direct ammonia fuel cell (DAFC) system design, which can deliver 61-67% electrical efficiency.
“I am very proud of the Alma team and their remarkable achievements in just over a year of system development,” said Bernt Skeie, CEO of Alma Clean Power. “To our knowledge, this is the highest power output ever demonstrated with direct ammonia solid oxide fuel cells.”
Alma’s proprietary technology feeds ammonia directly into the fuel cell system, negating the need for any energy-intensive pre-treatment to convert the fuel into hydrogen before producing electricity.
Compared with conventionally used combustion engines, Alma’s solution is claimed to benefit from higher efficiency levels, making ammonia-powered maritime energy systems economically viable for shipowners and operators. Furthermore, the SOFC modules have no rotating parts.
The SOFC system is operating 24/7 while being remotely monitored using a safety and control system.
“It’s rewarding to see the system operate with stable operation and consistent electricity generation,” explained Rune Tveit, a project manager at Alma Clean Power. “To gain knowledge and fine-tune the setup, testing will continue throughout the summer. After that, we will proceed with the assembly and testing of a complete 100kW module that will serve as the foundation for larger ship installations.”
