Renk has received its first order for the Marhy hybrid drive system from Norwegian shipping company Knutsen OAS.
The Marhy system enables ships with two-stroke engines to provide an onboard electricity supply using the main engine, with fully electric drive available for low-emission zones or in case of emergency.
The 600kW two-stroke Renk system will be fitted to Knutsen’s new-build 30,000m3 LNG carrier, and will incorporate a SHHII-1600 tunnel gearbox, an automatic PSC-75 propeller shaft clutch, elastic couplings and a 1MW generator/e-motor for the first time. The build will take place at the Hyundai Mipo shipyard in South Korea, with Renk taking responsibility for the system integration.
Once completed, the carrier will be based in the Italian Mediterranean Sea and be operated by Edison Energy of Milan, serving a series of LNG depots along the coast.
