Venice will host the world’s first e-Regatta in the summer of 2020, as a part of the city’s second International Boat Show.
The initiative was announced during the Salone Nautica di Venezia in June, where a number of hybrid, electric and fuel cell water taxis and workboats were demonstrated. The e-Regatta will be part of a Zero Emission Lake Festival, which will also include an electric boat procession along the Venice Grand Canal. The e-Regatta will comprise four competitive events, with the winners taking away the inaugural Murano Trophy and a cash prize. Full details of the event will be announced later this year.
Organized by Inland Waterways International and Kevin Desmond, founder of the Venice Agenda 2028 petition for the electrification of all boat traffic, the e-Regatta is encouraging all manufacturers of electric boats to take part. More e-Regattas are planned for May of 2020 in Germany, Hungary, Geneva and Italy.
