Wärtsilä has won a contract to retrofit four KOTC-owned vessels with Wärtsilä Fuel Efficiency Boost.
The modification to the vessels owned by Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) will reduce fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emission levels.
It is based on two-stroke engine optimization technology for selected Wärtsilä RT-flex and earlier X-type two-stroke engines. The four very large crude carriers use seven-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex82T two-stroke main engines.
The Wärtsilä Fuel Efficiency Boost is a combination of an increased compression ratio and modified injector nozzles. Combined with optimized engine tuning parameters, it offers fuel savings of 4%.
A pilot installation reduced fuel consumption by around 10-12 tons per day, with fuel savings of 1,195 tons over a nine-month pilot period.
Ali Shehab, acting CEO of KOTC, said, “By modifying the main engines of these carriers, we are assured of operating with the latest technology and having the best operational efficiency. We know and trust Wärtsilä’s high-quality products and systems, and we appreciate the excellent support they offer.”
